Don't be afraid of the dark...

True, light colors can brighten up a room and give it an airy feel. However, dark colors can be grounding. Using a dark color on your floor can give the room a foundation. Using dark colors on the wall can help to balance a room. Black is a sophisticated color, it's rich, elegant, and versatile; that's what makes a little black dress so great! As an accent color, black can be used in a variety of ways in a room. For example: in the photo below the Antracite color is used to create a modern black and white bathroom. Opposites attract - and look how beautifully this dark tile works in the space.

Using dark earth tones can have the same effect. The slate-look tile pictured below has a variety of color tones within in it, pulling color from other elements in the room. They set it off by using a lighter color on the walls which helps to emphasize the open and airy feeling in the room. Dark tiles may not be right for you, but don't automatically rule them out. When using the right combination of tile, paint colors, furniture, and accents a dark floor may help to pull all those elements together.
